DEP Information Meeting July 10, 2020

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held an information meeting to update local elected and appointed officials to provide the status of the Rock Hill Quarry located on North Rockhill Road since the last meeting which convened June 5, 2020.

The Rock Hill Quarry is still under a cease order.

The Department of Health continues to deal with issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once their official response to the list of asbestos-related questions submitted by DEP has been received, it will be posted to the DEP website.

On May 29, 2020, Hanson Aggregates submitted its written responses to DEP’s technical comments, dated March 2, 2020, relating to Hanson Aggregates’ Qualitative Geologic Survey Report (QGSR). Hanson Aggregates’ response is under review. Hanson Aggregates deadline to report TEM and petrographic analysis of rock samples of June 30, 2020 was extended to August 14, 2020 so that a full characterization of the site could be provided.

R.E. Pierson Materials’ removal of equipment from the site is continuing. A DEP inspector is always on site while the activity is taking place. Oversized loads will have an escort vehicle. Drivers should remain alert. On Saturday morning, July 11, 2020, three trucks will be there to remove sections of the conveyor. All R.E. Pierson Materials equipment is anticipated to be removed by July 31, 2020.

The R.E. Pierson Materials’ air quality permit has expired and therefore the Township appeal became moot and was subsequently withdrawn. There are only two permits in effect as of today, a Surface Mining Permit and a NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System), both of which are issued to Hanson Aggregates.

DEP continues to review information relating to the reclassification of the unnamed tributary to Tohickon Creek, known as Bog Run, which is the receiving stream for stormwater discharges at the Rock Hill Quarry. A public comment definitive date is not known at this time.

The DEP Rock Hill Quarry page continues to be updated with all documents received.
