DEP Information Meeting June 5, 2020

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held an information meeting to update local elected and appointed officials to provide the status of the Rock Hill Quarry located on North Rockhill Road since the last meeting which convened May 1, 2020.

The Rock Hill Quarry is still under a cease order.

The Department of Health is currently dealing with issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once their official response to the list of asbestos-related questions submitted by DEP has been received, it will be posted to the DEP website.

On May 29, 2020, Hanson Aggregates submitted its written responses to DEP’s technical comments, dated March 2, 2020, relating to Hanson Aggregates’ Qualitative Geologic Survey Report (QGSR). Hanson Aggregates’ response is under review. Hanson Aggregates has a deadline of June 30, 2020 to provide additional sample information originally requested in September 2019.

If Hanson Aggregates wishes to begin removing 500 tons of minerals per year from existing stockpiles at the Rock Hill Quarry, they must submit a formal permit modification request to DEP to revise the status of the Rock Hill Quarry and to change their mining plan.

R.E. Pierson Materials’ approval for the removal of equipment from the site is continuing. A DEP inspector is always on site while the activity is taking place. Oversized loads will have an escort vehicle. Drivers should remain alert.

On June 2, 2020, DEP issued a letter providing notice that all of R.E. Pierson Materials’ air quality permits and authorizations for the Rock Hill Quarry have expired or are otherwise invalid.

DEP continues to review information relating to the reclassification of the unnamed tributary to Tohickon Creek, known as Bog Run, which is the receiving stream for stormwater discharges at the Rock Hill Quarry.
