Building and Zoning Spot Light
From time to time, the office of building and zoning observes a trend in the types of inquires made to the township office. During the current economic climate the township has received increased inquires regarding home offices or home occupations and residential “in-law suites”. Building Inspector and Assistant Zoning Officer Michael Gardner reminds landowners and residents to check with the township office before moving forward with such projects. Accessory Home Occupations and home offices are permitted by township regulations. However, standards and conditions apply that must be abided by. In summary, the Zoning Ordinance provides a list of General Standards beginning with the definition of an accessory home occupation and standards that apply to all home occupations. Then the ordinance provides specific standards for the permitted types of accessory home occupations. These are Professional Office, Personal Services, Instructional Services, Home Crafts, Family Day Care, Trade Business and Repair Services and Other Home Occupations. The intent of the regulations is to provide for home occupations which are clearly subordinate or accessory to the existing residential use.
Accessory Family Apartments or more commonly known as “In-law Suites” are also regulated by the Zoning Ordinance. The units are designed for family members such as in-law parents. The intent of the regulations is to provide an accessory dwelling unit limited in size and not intended to become a rental or apartment open to the general public.
The provisions of the all regulations are available on the web at www.EastRockhillTownship.org. |
