Near Record February Snow Falls Increases Inquiries On Snow Removal And Sidewalk Clearing
The near record snow falls of January and February prompted phone inquiries regarding regulations on clearing of sidewalks and driveways. Director of Public Works, Steven D. Funk reminds all residents that the plowing or depositing of snow into the street or roadway is not only hazardous to drivers but also prohibited by township regulations. Chapter 21 of the Township’s Code of Ordinances establishes regulations on the proper removal of snow and ice from fire hydrants, mailboxes, sidewalks and roadways. In summary, sidewalks should be cleared within 12 hours. If the snow or ice cannot be removed without damaging the sidewalk, enough sand or other abrasive material should be put on the sidewalk to make travel reasonably safe. Residents are also encouraged to keep nearby storm inlets open to prevent drainage problems.
With the rains that sometimes follow snow falls, blocked water can overflow the roadway and cause icing and damage the street or road surface. Residents that live in more rural areas without sidewalks are also asked to assist in keeping driveway pipes in good repair, open and cleaned out. Replacement of damaged driveway pipes can be performed by the Public Works Department, the property owner is only charged for the pipe at cost.
Unfortunately, during major snow falls mailboxes may be accidentally damaged. It is the township’s policy to replace a mailbox if it determined the box was damaged by contacting the plow. Damage caused by ice and snow is the homeowner’s responsibility. |
