Skate Park Opens 2003 Season With New Fee And Membership System.

Beginning in May of 2002 the Township opened a 60’ X 120’ skate park in the Willard H. Markey Centennial Park. The first of its kind in the Pennridge Community the Park has been well received. Because the skate park was a new venture the operation has been a “learn as you go process” according to Township Manager, John V. Cornell. Because the level of interest was unknown, the township chose to evaluate and absorb the costs of manning the park for the first season. At a cost of approximately $30,000.00, the tennis court size facility was in response to the need for a suitable place for roller blade and skateboarders to practice the sports. The Township solicited funds and assistance from local businesses and raised approximately half of the funds. Donations are still being accepted and donations over $1,000.00 will be permanently recognized at the site on a plaque.

The skate park is attended at all times when open. The rules are posted for the safety of all skaters. Helmets and pads are required and children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. In an attempt to cover the costs of operation, beginning in April 2003 a membership program will be implemented. Similar to other municipal skate parks or swimming pool facilities participants will purchase passes. Daily passes will be $3.00, and an annual pass $30.00. In addition, the Park & Recreation Board will institute a skate free hour 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. The passes will be available at the Township office or at the Park beginning April 1st 2003. Any questions may be directed to 215-257-9156.
