Street Maintenance & Snow Removal

Throughout the year the Public Works Department attempts to keep roads clear, smooth, and safe. From spring through fall they perform routine street maintenance and special projects, and when snowflakes and ice fall, they plow and salt the roads.

Street Maintenance

When Spring rolls around, public works crews are out and about patching pot holes and resurfacing select roads. In addition, crews mow lawns and trim trees and brush along roadways to maintain right-of-way and visibility. They also clean out ditches that have been filled with leaves, dirt, and debris.

Snow Removal

The Public Works Department is committed to providing the fastest, most efficient response possible to snow and ice so our roads remain passable. The township uses five trucks equipped with snow plows and antiskid/de-icing spreaders. All crew members attend a full-day workshop on winter road maintenance, plowing techniques, and river safety each year.

Reminders & Tips for East Rockhill Snow Removal

Plows travel in the same direction as normal traffic flow, sometimes pushing snow at the end of residents’ driveways. To minimize the amount of snow pushed in front of your driveway, put shoveled snow on the right side of the driveway.
Mailboxes are often a problem. Unless a township vehicle actually strikes your mailbox, the township cannot offer reimbursement or repairs. Mailboxes are installed at your own risk within the right-of-way. Please be sure your mailbox is sturdy and doesn’t stick out into the roadway. Call your local Postmaster for installation guidelines.

PennDot Snow Removal

PennDot provides snow removal service on the following state roads in East Rockhill:

Fifth Street
Mountain View Drive
Old Bethlehem Road
Ridge Road (Route 563)
Route 313

Other roads are maintained by the township.

PennDot has advised that a maximum of 5 inches may accumulate on the roads before plowing will begin. Salt trucks may make only one pass. Report maintenance concerns toll-free to 1-800-FIX-ROAD (1-800-349-7623).

What You Can Do to Help

Travel only if necessary.
Move your car off the street. This helps the operator and provides clear travel lanes for motorists; this is especially important in cul-de-sacs.
Do not shovel or blow snow into the street: this is a township ordinance violation.
Please remove snow from fire hydrants to keep them visible in case of a fire.
Clear your sidewalks of snow and ice within 12 hours of a snow storm. This is a township ordinance.

Winter Driving Tips

Always wear a seat belt, drive at a reduced speed, and drive defensively.
Always turn on headlights during inclement weather.
Leave yourself plenty of time to get where you're going during the winter.
Keep your gas tank full.
Maintain at least twice the normal following distance when driving on snow or ice. Rear-end collisions account for most winter crashes.
Keep the vehicle in proper working condition. Make sure the engine is tuned and the battery, belts, hoses, and radiator are checked. Examine tires to make sure they have adequate tread, and keep tires properly inflated.
Periodically check windshield washing fluid level and only use fluids containing an antifreeze solvent. Keep an extra container of windshield fluid in the trunk.
Clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors, hood, headlights, taillights, and trunk before driving.
Keep an ice scraper, snow brush, deicer, small snow shovel, warning devices (flares or triangles), bag of salt or sand, flashlight, battery cables, tire chains, paper towels, and a blanket in each vehicle during the winter.
Maintain a distance of at least 6 car lengths behind a snow plow.
Do not pass a snow plow because the plow blades are wider than the truck.
Car pool or use mass transit whenever possible during the winter. Fewer cars on the road makes travel safer during a snow storm and expedites snow plowing operations.
Use extra care when driving on a bridge or elevated ramp during the winter because they freeze faster than normal roadways.
